Barry Phillips- Artist's Biography

Barry Phillips has been performing folk, new, classical and Indian classical/crossover music for many years.

As both arranger and producer for Gourd Music, Barry has worked on recordings exploring American Shaker music and Western European folk, including the albums Simple Gifts, Tree of Life, Music On The Mountain, Wondrous Love, The World Turned Upside Down, Colonial Christmas and his first solo release, Cello. Barry has also released Summer of Cello and Tråd. on his own independent label.

Barry was both a student and a composition assistant to Ravi Shankar, assisting Mr. Shankar in numerous compositions, including music for Mstislav Rostropovich, Joshua Bell, and the “Concert for George,” a George Harrison celebration at the Royal Albert Hall, where he played cello for both the Indian orchestra and the rock/pop sets.

Barry also toured worldwide on cello with The Anoushka Shankar Project.

He received his Masters of Music degree in composition from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, and in 2013 Barry received a Grammy as producer/engineer of Ravi Shankar's recording The Living Room Sessions Part 1.
