William Coulter - guitar, Shelley Phillips - Celtic harp and oboe, Neal Hellman - dulcimer and Debra Spencer - voice.
This concert is part of the Community Music School's Living History Concert Series, and all proceeds benefit the school. All performers are folk music faculty at the Community Music School and will be performing music from their four nationally acclaimed recordings of Shaker music, featured in some of the recent documentaries of Ken Burns as well as used pretty much continually at the Shaker village museums in New England and Kentucky. The Shakers are a religious sect that flourished in the Eastern United States in the 19th century after coming to this country from the British Isles. Known for the beautiful furniture and handcrafts they produced, their music reflects their dedication to work, friendship and humility and fits the spirited dances which were their unique form of worship. This concert is supported by a grant from the Capitola Arts Commission. |
