Steve Coulter (harp and recorder) and Harris Moore (hammered dulcimer) first met on a university campus in Santa Cruz, California, in 1978. Two years later, they founded Northern Lights, and Steve also went on to found Orison. Peripatetic, the two amicably parted musical company not long afterward, with Steve heading off to Denmark and Harris journeying to Switzerland and eventually settling in Holland. In 1986, they reunited in Denmark and recorded two albums as Northern Lights.
